Show dog – these are type of dogs that are groomed and totally trained for entrée to dog shows.  Show dogs are judged against exacting breed standards.  Sample of show dogs are bearded collies.

House pet dog – a family dog provide constant companionship and affection in the home.  Golden retrievers are house pet dogs; they are responsive to training and alert but require plenty of exercise.

Working dog – working dogs are highly intelligent and eager to serve.  They are also specially trained to be an aid.  Working dogs like Labrador Retrievers need more energy and a larger diet then equivalent housedogs.

Lap dog – small companion dogs can be a great comfort, but they need more exercise than you might expect because they are active breeds.  Their size means they are less expensive to feed.  Sample lap dogs are Chihuahuas, which are tiny, plucky and playful pets.

Guard dog – these are dog breeds that offer protection and security.  However, to own one you must be experienced in dog handling, and be aware of what the law requires.  Guard dogs like the Rottweilers are fierce if aroused.  Rottweilers are also used as guide dogs for the blind, also used in search and rescue, as guard or police dogs, etc.
