Golf's Basic Grips

You can use several grips in playing golf.  Every golf player should establish a proper grip so that he or she has the right control of the club face and of the ball.  The following are the different methods of grip:

First, there is what they call the Overlapping grip, which is widely used by most golfers.  In doing this, you should place the handle of your club in the heel of your left hand and across the palm.  As you close your hand, the club should sit in the crook of the forefinger.  Wrap your fingers around for a light and secure grip.  The thumb should now sit just to the right of center on top of the handle.  Position the right hand so that the handle of the club rests in the crook of the middle two fingers.  Overlap the knuckle of the forefinger of the left hand with the little finger of the right hand.  Then rest your right thumb on the front face of the grip and to the left of the club shaft.

Another form of grip is the Interlocking Method.  This method is use by golfers who have small hands and by amateurs.  The difference here with the overlapping grip is that here, the little finger and forefinger of opposite hands are interlocked.  In doing this, rest the handle in the palm of your left hand keeping the forefinger pointing down.  Bring the right hand under the left, slotting in the last two fingers of the right hand between the left-hand forefingers.  Rest the club in the crook of the two middle fingers of the right hand.  Close the right hand snugly over the left.  The left thumb should be encased in the right hand.

Thirdly, there is the Two-handed Method.  All eight fingers of both hands in this grip are on the handle.  Both palms face each other but do not overlap.  The forefinger and little finger of opposite hands rest side-by-side.  Doing this, make a pistol-like grip with the fingers around the handle close to the butt.  The thumb lies to the right.  Bring the right hand toward the grip and try to keep both palms facing each other.  All four fingers of your right hand should wrap around the handle with the thumb on top.
