I am very interested in investing my money in the stock market. I have a friend who is a stock market broker and she is the one who is encouraging me to do it. Therefore, I researched in the internet on how to invest in the stock market. This is what I have researched.

First, what is investing online?

According to Wikipedia, investing online, or self-directed investing, has become the norm for individual investors and traders over the past decade with many, if not all brokers’ now offering online services with unique trading platforms.

What is an online broker and what do they do?

An online broker is a broker that is able to make a stock trade for its customers via the internet.

What the investors do in the past is, they had to call up their brokers and do the order. The broker would then enter the order in their system linked to trading floors and exchanges. Now, investors can enter orders directly online with the help of the internet. Online brokers are also called as discount brokers because of their lower fees. They received lower fees compared to full service brokers because full service brokers give advice to clients.

What to look for in an online broker?

There are many online brokers that you can find in the internet. What to look for in an online broker? First, you look for the brokerage rates. You are charged for buying or selling through your online account at this rate. These rates are usually charged based on a sliding scale. The more units you purchase in a single transaction, the less the "cost per unit" you will pay. Second, look for hidden fees in account contracts within the terms and conditions. Third is, of course with a phone access. Online services can go down during hours of service. This is why you must have phone access to your online broker. Do not even consider using an online broker if they do not provide phone access.
